The church is located directly on the Alpe-Adria Cycle Path. There's also a nice rest area with drinking water.

...from Tarvisio, a well-developed cycle path leads south through the Val Canale 🚴♂️! Some of the good rest stops are right along the cycle path! 👀😋

The fortified church of Tarvisio was built very solidly and is surrounded by moats, towers and walls, to defend against enemies. These defensive elements were built around 1450-70. In 1478 the fortified church managed to resist an assault by the Turks, while in 1492 it had to succumb. Inside the octagonal tower there is a basement that was once connected to a hidden tunnel, used to let people in and out and to supply the church in case of siege. This floor was also used as an ossuary and crypt, and later abandoned, only to be restored and reopened to the public in 1999.
