August 9, 2026, Llangynidr Bridge

Llangynidr Bridge is said to be the oldest bridge on the River Usk and dates back to around 1700. It is a super beautiful but narrow bridge with entry bollards at either end to slow down traffic. There is only room for single file traffic in one direction only (both ways), and it is really restricted to vehicles up to about the size of a small Renault/Ford van. Anything bigger is just fun to watch! There are no traffic lights.

This is something you don't expect to find on the banks of the Monmouth and Brecon Canal. Near the quiet village of Llangattock stands a towering giant redwood, or Sequoiadendron giganteum.  It dominates the surrounding vegetation and has a massive girth of 10.6 metres at 1.5 m, but near the ground it is an amazing 21.56 m. Giant redwoods were introduced into the UK by William Lobb in 1853, after he made a visit to California.

Very nice bridge not for traffic though as it’s a single lane track with passing gaps for pedestrians.

In-wall stairs built for pedestrians to use to climb down on to the canal below, these steps are marked with a bridle path sign just nestled to the side of the Roman bridge that sits over the canal.

If riding across bridge into Crick, take the first right hand road (next to the pub) to avoid traffic going up the hill and into town. It also takes you straight tup to the high st.

It’s a good idea to have hiking poles for the walk down along the rivers edge as it’s was very slippy and some really steep steps up and down for which I clung to branches so as not to fall in the water. Good fun but a little risky.
