Tips from the Community

Stenio Melani
August 6, 2026, Mouth of the Ombrone River

La Foce dell'Ombrone (also known as Bocca d'Ombrone) is the point where the Ombrone river, the second longest watercourse in Tuscany (160 km), flows into the Tyrrhenian Sea in a cuspate delta. This protected and wild natural environment is located in the province of Grosseto, entirely enclosed within the evocative Maremma Regional Park. The area represents one of the most important examples of a coastal wetland in the region, characterized by a unique landscape where pristine beaches, sandy dunes, historic marshes (such as the Paludi della Trappola), and ancient pine forests merge together. The landscape of the estuary is famous for the gnarled trunks, bleached by the sun and salt, accumulated along the shoreline, as well as for the frequent presence of semi-wild herds of Maremma cattle and horses led by the typical butteri (cowboys).

From the Torre di Castel Marino (12th century), located in the heart of the Maremma Regional Park, you can enjoy one of Tuscany's most evocative coastal views. The gaze sweeps over an endless expanse of pines from the Pineta Granducale, which slopes down towards the open sea and the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago. From the height, you overlook the coast from Cala di Forno to the mouth of the Ombrone river, with the nearby Torre di Collelungo framing the scene, and on the clearest days, it is possible to clearly discern the profile of the Island of Giglio.

The Torre di Castel Marino is an ancient coastal tower in the Maremma Natural Park. Built by the Aldobrandeschi in medieval times, it stands on a height of the Monti dell'Uccellina, overlooking the Granducale Pine Forest and the sea. It is reachable via the park's A2 hiking trail.

The beaches of the Maremma Regional Park offer a wild coastline of 25 km between Principina a Mare and Talamone, characterized by fine sand, dunes, and pine forests. The main beaches include Marina di Alberese (with partial car access), the wild Collelungo, and the suggestive Cala di Forno, accessible via trails.

L'Ombrone Grossetano is the second river in Tuscany after the Arno, with its 161 kilometers. It is important enough to even have a legend, that of Ambra and Ombrone. It is said that Ambra was a beautiful nymph with changing eyes that, when she danced illuminated by the moon, turned now green, now silvery. Ombrone fell madly in love with her, but she wanted nothing to do with it and fled. Ombrone chased her and they ran through cliffs and narrow gorges, then across the plain, until Ambra got tired. She then asked for help from the goddess Diana, who immediately transformed her into a rocky islet, where Istia now stands. And since then, Ombrone had no choice but to surround and embrace her forever with its waters.

Collelungo beach is beautiful in every season! Be careful…don’t do as I did: biking on the beach is prohibited! A park ranger approached me today and kindly told me, but I would have been fined!
