In the heart of Lokrum rises the former Benedictine monastery, a historic site whose roots date back to the 11th century. The impressive ruin combines Romanesque and Gothic architectural forms with elements of the Renaissance. In the 17th century, the monastery was abandoned after an earthquake, before being purchased in the 19th century by Archduke Maximilian of Habsburg. He established his summer residence here with an exotic garden and breathed new life into the place.

The Portoč boat harbor forms the access to the approximately 1,600-meter-long and 500-meter-wide island of Lokrum, off Dubrovnik. The most convenient way to reach the island is by the nature reserve's official shuttle boats. The ships Zrinski and Skala shuttle regularly between Dubrovnik and Lokrum, with the crossing taking about 15 to 20 minutes. It is important that you definitely catch the last boat, which usually departs around 6 p.m. This is because there are no overnight accommodation facilities on the island.

Highly recommended, early morning best time for running....small bay is great for swimming... One correction of the name of small island, it's Grebeni, not Lokrum....Lokrum is in front of the Old Town....

The history of the island dates back to the 11th century, more precisely to 1023, the date of the foundation of a Benedictine monastery. The name Lokrum (La-croma) comes from the Latin word acrumen, which means “bitter fruit”. A botanical tradition – and especially the cultivation of fruit – dates back to the Benedictine era. According to legend, Richard the Lionheart, during his return from the crusade in 1192, finds refuge on the island after his ship was shipwrecked. In gratitude, the king decides to build a church on the island; however, at the request of the citizens of Dubrovnik, the church is built in that city and not on the island of Lokrum. Until 1798, the island remained under the aegis of the Benedictine order. Over the centuries, the order built and enlarged the monastery and erected a basilica. Both were severely damaged by the earthquake of 1667. In 1798, the Benedictines left the island due to the suppression of the order, and the island remained abandoned until 1806, the era of the occupation by the Napoleonic army and the construction of Fort Royal.
