Lokrum Island

Highlight • Natural

Since the island is located directly in front of Dubrovnik and is very easy to reach, we did not miss a visit. The free running rabbits and peacocks make the whole thing entertaining. And as a GoT fan there is one or another place that seems familiar to you.
There are several bars and small restaurants, old buildings and parks.
Highly recommended.

The island's history dates back to the 11th century, more precisely to 1023, the year a Benedictine monastery was founded. The name Lokrum (La-croma) comes from the Latin word acrumen, meaning "bitter fruit." A botanical tradition—and especially fruit cultivation—dates back to the Benedictine era. According to legend, Richard the Lionheart, returning from the Crusade in 1192, found refuge on the island after his ship sank. In gratitude, the king decided to build a church on the island; however, at the request of the citizens of Dubrovnik, the church was built in that city and not on Lokrum Island.
Until 1798, the island remained under the auspices of the Benedictine order. Over the centuries, the order built and expanded the monastery and erected a basilica. Both were severely damaged by the 1667 earthquake.
In 1798, the Benedictines left the island due to the suppression of the order, and the island remained abandoned until 1806, when it was occupied by the Napoleonic army and Fort Royal was built.

Fort Royal on Lokrum Island

Highlight • Historical Site

Ascent to Fort Royal is quite steep, not or only difficult suitable for prams, above great view over the sea, the coast and from the top of the tower to the old town of Dubrovnik through the trees.
