In the heart of Lokrum rises the former Benedictine monastery, a historic site whose roots date back to the 11th century.

In the 17th century, the monastery was abandoned after an earthquake, before being purchased in the 19th century by Archduke Maximilian of Habsburg. He established his summer residence here with an exotic garden and breathed new life into the place.
