Carved entirely into the rock of the Murgecchia plateau, the rock-hewn Church of the Madonna delle Vergini has medieval origins. The facade, embedded in the stone, is from the 18th century. The simple and intimate interior shows signs of some renovations that have partially altered the original hypogeal structure. It preserves an altar of painted tuff, a depiction of the Virgin, and a 19th-century wooden statue of the Madonna and Child. A short corridor leads to another, small hypogeal room. Interesting is the floor of local terracotta decorated with a row of majolica tiles. As per centuries-old tradition, the Madonna's feast is celebrated here on the last Sunday of May.

In the early 2000s, sculptor and artist Antonio Paradiso conceived a project to recover and redevelop a disused calcarenite quarry: through Land Art and contemporary sculpture works, he transformed the space into an open-air museum. The large stone and steel works are immersed in the wide square and dialogue with the surrounding material and landscape. The rock walls, marked by geometric cuts and more or less deep incisions, bear witness to decades of extractive activity with different processing techniques. Clear and discontinuous traces thus tell the story of the quarrymen's work and the transformation of matter: “When I bought it, it was a dump, full of waste materials and debris of all kinds, but I immediately saw that the quarry itself was already a sculpture, representing human effort.”

This city is truly special and incomparable. When you consider that until the end of the 50s, people here still lived miserably in cave dwellings.

The southern Italian city of Matera is impressive and attractive, but at the same time also mysterious and a bit rough. It looks more like a labyrinth of stone houses, steep staircases and narrow streets. The Sassi di Matera, or Stones of Matera, is full of caves that were once inhabited and were therefore a disgrace to Italy. Times have changed suddenly, and today the Sassi di Matera are the pride not only of the city, but also of the entire Basilicata region, in which Matera is located.
