This quarrying dates back to prehistoric times, but the millstones still present today date mainly from the Middle Ages. Arkose is a very hard beige or light grey rock consisting of small grains of quartz. This rock is 400 million years old here. The rock was and still is widely used for construction in the Vielsalm region. The church of Salm-Château is a good example of this. Pits bearing traces of the quarrying of this rock are present along the entire length of this rock formation, from the Baraque de Fraiture to Robertville.
