Westerlo's market square has the shape of an elongated triangle. This typical square shape, which occurs in many Kempen villages, points to a settlement of Frankish origin. There are still a number of stately imposing townhouses around the market square.

The village center of Westerlo is triangular, the typical shape of a Frankish settlement. The square is dominated by a giant lime tree. It was planted around 1630. The tree has a trunk circumference of 3.9 meters and a crown diameter of 18 meters. The tree rests with its disc-shaped crown on a cast-iron frame.
