The Secovlje saltpans are today the largest coastal wetland in Slovenia, covering an area of approximately 650 hectares, and are considered one of the most important sites for nesting and migratory birds in the region. The saltpans have a history of over 700 years and are among the oldest still active saltpans in Europe. According to written sources, they originated as early as 804, with some authors even suggesting an even older tradition. The saltpans have been protected under the Ramsar Convention since 1993.
