Polders of Kruibeke

Highlight โ€ข Natural

The polders of Kruibeke are the largest flood plain in Flanders. And yet they are only really flooded a few times a year.

When the water recedes here, a world of natural beauty opens up for you. With mudflats and salt marshes, alder forests, thousands of meadow and water birds. You can see deer, beavers and with a bit of luck even otters.

Have you heard of the Sigma Plan? This ingenious plan creates floodplains along the Scheldt to protect inhabited areas from flooding. When the water level of the river rises, the lock gates of the overflow dike open. And that produces beautiful scenes, even with waterfalls that bring enormous amounts of water towards nature reserve. When the water recedes, mudflats and salt marshes remain. Nature thrives here and beautiful landscapes unfold with fertile vegetation and animal inhabitants.

Not to be missed is the beaver trail, which takes you 1.2 kilometers along the Rupelmondse Kreek!

Mira Bridge

Highlight โ€ข Bridge

The Mira Bridge is a bridge over the Durme, on the border of the Belgian municipalities of Hamme and Waasmunster. It was built in the period 1896-1900.
The bridge got its name and fame thanks to the feature film Mira, the 1971 film adaptation of the book De teleurgang van de Waterhoek by Stijn Streuvels by Fons Rademakers, with Willeke van Ammelrooy and Jan Decleir in the leading roles. The script was by Hugo Claus.
The bridge that Streuvels described was not between Hamme and Waasmunster, but was the Vierendeel Bridge that connected Ruien with Avelgem. However, it was dynamited and replaced twice. The current bridge is a much more modern version of the original.
At the beginning of the First World War, the middle section of the bridge was blown up by the local population, in an attempt to stop the Germans and their war material.

Heather Stropersbos

Highlight โ€ข Natural

In the 19th century, coniferous forests were planted on a large scale in the Stropersbos. That wood was needed to firmly support the tunnels of the coal mines. But in terms of natural value it did not amount to much. That is why the coniferous forest was thinned and cut down over the years. Young heathland appeared again, with bushes and shrubs. Highly appreciated by field crickets and woodlarks. Grazers ensure that the young heath does not reforest.

Spletteren Bridge over the Moervaart

Highlight โ€ข Bridge

A historic location where steam trains on the Aalst - Lokeren - Zelzate line thundered over from 1867. This bridge over the Moervaart was blown up twice by retreating armies. In 1918 by the German army and in 1940 by the Belgian army. The bridge, which was repaired by the occupier after 1940, has been preserved unchanged today. The name Spletteren refers to the old name of the surrounding fields.
At this location you have a beautiful view over the picturesque Moervaart.

One of the paths in the bid is therefore called "Liniedreef". This runs along the canal "De Linie".

Wissekerke Castle

Highlight โ€ข Castle

Wissekerke Castle in Basel was originally a real moated castle, the first mentions of which date back to the tenth century. Later, the noble Vilain XIIII family converted the castle into a real neo-Gothic castle, with a gatehouse in neo-Tudor style. The interiors have largely been preserved. The Egyptian room and the salon in Empire style particularly appeal to the imagination.
Anyone who takes a look just outside the castle grounds will be impressed by the 600-meter-long castle avenue with monumental beech trees dozens of meters high. A beautiful place to walk, cycle or just take a rest and enjoy the rustling leaves.

Dodendraad (Wire of Death) Memorial, De Klinge

Highlight โ€ข Historical Site

After the fall of Antwerp on October 10, 1914, the Waasland quickly came under German occupation. The border with the neutral Netherlands is cordoned off with German sentries. These soldiers cannot prevent the border from being often crossed by smugglers. Food prices in the Netherlands are much lower and bold smugglers can sell the products on the black market for a big profit. In addition to economic goods, volunteers for the Belgian army, soldiers' letters and spies are also smuggled across the border. In the spring of 1915, the Germans tried to stop the smuggling by laying the death wire. A high-voltage electrical wire is supposed to deter smugglers. The high voltage on the Death Wire ensures that people are electrocuted at the slightest contact with the wire. During this period the inhabitants are not yet aware of the dangers of electricity. To the left and right of the electric barrier, a protective wire is placed in barbed wire or in chicken wire. Inventive smugglers soon found numerous ways to overcome the wire: barrels without messengers, a wooden window system, protective rubber clothingโ€ฆ Hundreds of daredevils all over the Belgian-Dutch border, however, paid for their crossing with their lives, including at least three victims in De Klinge and Meerdonk.

April 5, 2026, Spletteren Bridge over the Moervaart

On Friday, April 5, 1867, the Spletterenbrug was officially opened. Between Moerbeke and Lokeren, trains stopped in Daknam and Eksaarde. In Moerbeke, travelers could transfer to railway line 77 towards Zelzate or towards Sint-Gillis-Waas. That the intention was to one day double the 9-kilometer railway line to two tracks is still visible on the Spletterenbrug. Both bridge abutments are indeed twice as wide as the bridge deck itself. It never came to that. On the contrary. The railway line suffered during both world wars, causing traffic to be suspended for months. For example, retreating German soldiers blew up the bridge at the end of World War I. Less than a year after the armistice, in September 1919, the line was already restored and trains could run on the route again. In 1940, the Belgian army, in turn, tried to slow down the German advance by destroying the bridge. The bridge was repaired again. In 1971, the last train chugged along the route. After more than a century of train traffic, the tracks were dismantled and the route was redeveloped as a cycling and walking path from Lokeren to Moerbeke. The Spletterenbrug itself was preserved and restored in 2017. The seven layers of paint were removed, and the bridge regained its original, dark gray color. Source: industriecultuur.be
