July 4, 2026, Site of the Peter and Paul Chapel

Peter und Paul Kapelle Near Puttgarden stood the Peter und Paul Kapelle from 1198 to 1644, built on the orders of the Danish ruler Knud VI., who was thus responding to a request from the Pope. Here in Puttgarden, pilgrims coming from the Danish island of Lolland thanked their Lord for the successful crossing and made an offering of thanks into the oak offertory box, the so-called "Strand-Block", which stood in front of the chapel on the open beach at the time. This Strandblock is now located in the Burger Sankt Jürgen Kapelle. Until the Reformation, the Peter und Paul Kapelle served the people of Fehmarn as a place of pilgrimage. Today, a small shelter with a small bell tower on the path to Puttgarden beach commemorates the former house of worship. A memorial plaque informs pilgrims about the history of the Peter und Paul Kapelle.
