Once around the beautiful island of Fehmarn, that's 65 kilometers in total and a lot of fun.
A beautiful and very varied tour! The weather also had a few surprises in store! The Border Shop has a huge selection of spirits! For those who like...
Circumnavigating the island of Fehmarn is always worth a trip. Almost only along the Baltic Sea, with a few stretches through settlements. There are always fantastic views, e.g. of the cliffs, nature reserves, etc. The route is easy to follow everywhere and is very well signposted. A great day trip. A small downside is the construction site for the Fehmarnbelt tunnel, but this too will be finished at some point. Tip: we would do this official tour in spring, when all the migratory birds are resting here or going about their breeding business. And in the other direction, climb the Flügger lighthouse, it is not very busy after 10 a.m.; then visit the Nabucenter to watch the birds and do the same in the nature reserve. No one needs to starve or die of thirst on this tour, as there are tasty treats on offer everywhere on the island.
A really nice bike tour that mostly leads directly along the water 👍
The route begins and ends in Gahlendorf and was ridden anti-clockwise. Wind from the north-east. That makes the first 30km or so relatively relaxed. From the Flügger lighthouse onwards, the route then went against the wind for a long time. Quite exhausting. On the section from Flügge to Lemkenhafen, you have to stop regularly to open the gates for the sheep. The weather was great. The bike traffic was OK, it's already the off-season.
The island tour is a must for every cyclist who is on Fehmarn. I like to ride the lap early in the morning at sunrise 🌄 on the east coast when there is still little going on on the island. But you can also do the round during the day and then fill your stomach with fish rolls at the many campsites and other refreshment stations 😋. Or also good in the evening when the wind and tourism subside...
My new favorite island. :-) I prefer to ride around 70km on my tours. That's perfect here. Plus, you're practically riding along the sea the entire time. I set off around 7:30am and still had the roads pretty much to myself. Around midday, however, with the nice weather, everyone got on their bikes at the same time. It was quite crowded. Luckily, I was almost done by then. But I have to admit, that was to be expected on a public holiday.
Nice tour all the way around the island. Unfortunately not all of the paths along the water are passable. The aftermath of the storm surge from October is still visible. Either get off and push or take a detour.
