August 18, 2024, Wooden Church in Świątkowa Wielka

The church was built in 1924-1926. It is the third church in this place, the two previous ones having burned down – the first in the 18th century and the second, built in 1854, burned down during World War I. Today it serves as a Roman Catholic church. Behind the church is a mass grave from World War I.

The old cemetery, where the inhabitants of the village of Czarne were buried. A dozen or so stone and cast iron tombstones have survived here to this day. There was also an Orthodox church next to the cemetery. Oddly enough, it did not share the fate of other Lemko churches and stood here until 1993. Then it was dismantled and moved to the open-air museum in Nowy Sącz.

A lonely door with a house number. It is a symbolic memento of the village of Czarne that once existed here. The residents were evicted in 1947.

A place for a large bonfire, with benches and even a stone table. There is water in the well, but the well crane has no neck. The regulations prohibit staying overnight or leaving cars from dusk to dawn.

About 500 meters from the mouth of Zawoja there are the remains of a Lemko cemetery. There are several interesting tombstones there, including: a village teacher and in the south-eastern corner the only grave with the signature of the creator - Iwan Szatyński (1911) This sculptor lived for some time in Nieznajowa. The cemetery was preserved in 1986 thanks to the efforts of the Social Commission for the Care of Monuments of Orthodox Church Art.
