This high alpine lake is quite the view and a destination for many. **If you plan on parking here to hike Mt. Evans, a reservation is required to park at Summit Lake and must be purchased through recreation.gov PRIOR to the day of your hike. It's $7. All specific and important info can be found at: recreation.gov/timed-entry/10087438

Embarking on the ascent of Mount Blue Sky (formerly Mount Evans) is must-do for any cyclist looking for a high altitude challenge. The road up to the summit, which is at 14,130 feet above sea level, is the highest paved road in North America, so as you ride up this epic switchbacking road, keep an eye on how you feel because many experience altitude sickness at these elevations. The summit parking lot is a great place to rest, take photos, and enjoy the views before heading back down the road, which demands vigilance. There are no guardrails, little to no shoulder, and steep drops along the road so please be aware as you begin your descent.

This section of Little Bear Creek Road from the summit of Mestaa'Ėhehe pass to just before series of tight switchbacks is a fun, smooth gravel road that is doable on a road bike. If descending and not feeling the switchbacks, you can take a sharp right, then a left on to Old Little Bear Creek Road (a slightly less well-graded gravel road) that is more straight for some fun, fast descending.

Idaho Springs, Colorado, is a small former mining town just off of I-70. This is a great place for hikers, cyclists, and trail runners to start or end an outdoor adventure; with its blend of history, local shops and restaurants, and natural beauty this is a must-stop for anyone visiting Colorado.

Mestaa'Ėhehe Pass (formerally Squ*w Pass) Summit is located at just over 9,800 feet. This is a popular area for cyclists in the summer time as the temperatures are significantly cooler than in Denver. This also marks the spot where most typically finish the bulk of their climbing. If you are heading back to Idaho Springs or Denver, it's mostly downhill with some great descending.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there truly traffic-free road cycling routes in Mount Evans Wilderness?

While the iconic Mount Blue Sky Scenic Byway offers an unparalleled high-altitude cycling experience, it is currently undergoing improvements and will be closed to all traffic, including bikes, from September 3, 2024, through all of 2025. It is tentatively scheduled to reopen for Memorial Day weekend in 2026. However, the region still offers routes with very low traffic, allowing for a more serene cycling experience away from busy roads. These routes often utilize less-traveled county roads or designated scenic byways during off-peak times.

What are some challenging no-traffic road cycling routes in the area?

For those seeking a significant challenge, routes like Echo Lake to Mount Blue Sky (Evans) Summit offer substantial elevation gain over long distances. While the Byway itself is closed for now, other routes in the vicinity, such as Idaho Springs to Witter Gulch — Gravel, provide demanding climbs and descents on less-trafficked roads, often with mixed surfaces.

What is the best time of year for road cycling in Mount Evans Wilderness?

The prime season for road cycling in Mount Evans Wilderness is typically late spring through early fall, roughly from June to September. During these months, the weather is generally more stable, and roads are clear of snow. However, even in summer, conditions can be volatile at high altitudes, with possibilities of wind, rain, lightning, snow, or hail. Always check the forecast and road conditions before heading out, especially for higher elevation routes.

What kind of wildlife can I expect to see along the routes?

The Mount Evans Wilderness is renowned for its abundant wildlife. Cyclists often have opportunities to spot mountain goats and bighorn sheep, especially at higher elevations. Marmots, pikas, golden eagles, and various hawks are also common sightings. Remember to maintain a respectful distance and never feed wild animals.

Are there any family-friendly or beginner-level no-traffic road cycling options?

While many routes in the Mount Evans Wilderness are quite challenging due to significant elevation changes and high altitudes, some areas near towns like Idaho Springs or Evergreen may offer flatter, less-trafficked sections suitable for families or beginners. It's crucial to research specific route profiles for distance and elevation to ensure they match your group's ability. Always prioritize safety and be mindful of altitude effects.

What should I wear and bring for a summer road cycling trip in this region?

Due to the extreme altitude and volatile weather, it's essential to be prepared. Even in summer, bring layers of appropriate cold weather gear, including a windproof and waterproof jacket. Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a helmet are a must. Carry ample food and water, as resupply points can be scarce. A basic repair kit, first-aid supplies, and a fully charged phone are also highly recommended. Be vigilant for signs of altitude sickness.

Are there any scenic viewpoints or natural attractions along the no-traffic routes?

Absolutely. The region is famous for its breathtaking panoramic views, extending from Denver to the Continental Divide. You'll encounter serene alpine lakes like Echo Lake and Summit Lake. The Mount Goliath Natural Area is home to ancient bristlecone pines. While the Byway is closed, many other routes offer stunning vistas. For specific points of interest, consider exploring highlights like Mount Blue Sky (Evans) Summit (when accessible) or Guanella Pass Summit.

Where can I find parking and access points for these routes?

Parking is typically available in towns like Idaho Springs, Georgetown, or at designated trailheads and recreation areas. For example, Echo Lake Park is a popular starting point for routes heading towards higher elevations. Always check local regulations and signage for parking availability and any fees that may apply before you arrive.

Are there any loop trails for no-traffic road biking in Mount Evans Wilderness?

While many routes are out-and-back, some areas allow for creating loop rides by combining different low-traffic roads. For instance, exploring the network of roads around Idaho Springs, such as the moderate Idaho Springs to Silver Lake and Lake Quivira, can be part of a larger loop. Planning with a map or a GPS device is recommended to link suitable segments.

What do other road cyclists enjoy most about cycling in Mount Evans Wilderness?

The komoot community highly rates the cycling experience in this region, with an average score of 4.7 stars. Reviewers often praise the challenging climbs, the unparalleled high-altitude scenery, and the sense of accomplishment from conquering significant elevation gains. The opportunity to ride through diverse ecological zones and spot abundant wildlife is also frequently highlighted.

Are there any alternatives to the Mount Blue Sky Scenic Byway for high-altitude road cycling during its closure?

Yes, while the Mount Blue Sky Scenic Byway is closed, you can still find challenging high-altitude road cycling experiences in the broader Colorado Front Range. Consider routes that include Guanella Pass Climb, which offers significant elevation gain and stunning views. Always check current road conditions and closures before planning your ride, as mountain passes can be affected by weather.
