Square top mountain reaches up to 13,794 feet and is a tough (but safe) climb on the border of Pike and Arapaho National Forests. You have the chance to view a number of alpine lakes when traveling up Square Top, and the summit has a direct view of Shelf Lake tucked under the cliffs of Decatur Mountain in a cool alpine cirque.

There is a spur trail off of the South Park Trail before hitting the split to Square Top Mountain. This trail gets you up close and personal with the two alpine lakes fed by the snowmelt on the slopes of the mountain. The lakes are over 12,000 feet in elevation, thus well over treeline. The entire area is a riparian environment and home to wildflowers, pikas, and marmots.

The trail is a doubletrack which winds around the foothills of Geneva and Bierstadt above treeline. The route is not very technical and the views are fabulous.

From here the trail gets slightly more technical as you descend off the false peak and make your way up to Geneva. The views of Epaulet and the valley south of Bierstadt are stunning.

At 12,335 feet, Geneva Mountain is not one of the tallest peaks in the area, but it still offers great views (and some solitude). Views from the summit are of Mount Evans Wilderness and Mount Bierstadt basin. The entire run to this peak is above treeline and offers great views from the tundra ecosystem.

Mostly used as a milestone going up/down. It can be helpful to have hiking sticks to get across to avoid getting wet trail shoes.

Mount Bierstadt has a reputation for being one of the easiest mountains over 14,000 feet to climb within Colorado state. The reality is that it's still a tough run!

Abyss Lake is one of the highest alpine lakes in Colorado, sitting at 12,680 feet. The lake itself doesn't seem too many visitors due to its remoteness, but the two 14,000-foot peaks making up its basin walls see lots of crowds. This lake provides a wilderness feel that many of the wilderness trails in the area can not match.

Can I bring my dog on the running trails?

While the region is generally dog-friendly, specific regulations may apply to certain trails or areas within the wilderness.
