December 24, 2025, Nine Mile Creek as it flows through Bredesen Park

Despite its name, the Nine Mile Creek actually flows for 15 miles before eventually emptying into the Minnesota River. It was historically named by soldiers from Fort Snelling who traveled nine miles southwest along the Old Shakopee Road to reach a crossing point on the creek. This highlight is located where both Nine Mile Creek, and the Nine Mile Creek Regional Trail, cut through the southwest corner of Bredesen Park.

Bredesen Park is a 206-acre natural area in Edina, Minnesota,. Its woodlands, marshlands, and creeks that provide a retreat from the surrounding urban bustle. Three separate trails, a paved bike path, a paved pedestrian trail, and a natural-surface nature trail—encircle the park. These trails connect directly to the Nine Mile Creek Regional Trail at the southwest corner, which in turn connects with multiple trails throughout the greater metropolitan area. The park offers year-round restrooms, drinking fountains, and multiple off-street parking lots accessible from Olinger Boulevard and Vernon Avenue. A major ecological restoration is currently underway to return 31 acres of the park to its native oak savanna state.

Right before or after you cross Highway 100 in Edina, you will see Edina Lake. It is a shallow lake with poor water quality, not meeting state standards for shallow lakes. Therefore, it's advisable not to engage in activities involving direct contact with the water.
