Routes like "Kölnbrein Dam – Snack station Kölnbreinstüberl loop from Kölnbrein Dam" are shorter but still involve elevation, so they might be suitable for families with older, more experienced children.
While the region is generally dog-friendly for outdoor activities, specific regulations for cycling with dogs on these no-traffic routes, especially within the Hohe Tauern National Park boundaries, should be checked locally. Always ensure your dog is well-behaved, on a leash where required, and that you carry enough water for both of you, especially on longer, more strenuous routes.
The routes offer stunning high-alpine scenery. You'll encounter majestic peaks of the Ankogelgruppe, including views of the Hafner mountain, and diverse alpine flora. The Rotgüldensee Hut itself is a notable landmark at 1,735 meters, offering breathtaking views. Some routes, like "Waterfalls North of the Mur – Upper Mur River Source loop from Jedl", specifically highlight waterfalls.
Yes, all the no-traffic touring cycling routes featured in this guide are circular. This allows you to start and end at the same point without needing to arrange transport back. Parking availability varies by starting point. For routes originating near the Kölnbrein Dam, such as "Kölnbrein Dam – Snack station Kölnbreinstüberl loop from Kölnbrein Dam", parking is typically available at or near the dam itself. Public transport options to reach the high-alpine starting points directly around Unterer Rotgüldensee are generally limited. While buses might serve larger villages in the Lungau region like Muhr, reaching the specific trailheads often requires a car or a dedicated shuttle service, especially for routes deep within the mountains. It's advisable to research specific bus routes and schedules in advance if you plan to use public transport.
The best time for touring cycling in this high-alpine region is typically from late spring (June) through early autumn (September). During these months, the weather is generally more stable, and the routes are free of snow. Outside of this period, you may encounter snow, ice, or rapidly changing weather conditions, making cycling challenging and potentially unsafe.
While general cycling on designated routes is usually permitted, specific regulations may apply within the Hohe Tauern National Park, especially for certain areas or off-road sections. It's always recommended to check with the National Park administration or local tourist information offices for any specific permits or restrictions that might apply to touring cyclists in the areas you plan to visit.
The area is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.9 stars. Reviewers often praise the stunning, untouched high-alpine landscapes, the tranquility of the no-traffic routes, and the challenging yet rewarding climbs that lead to incredible panoramic views. The opportunity to immerse oneself in nature away from crowds is a frequently highlighted aspect.
Given the remote, high-alpine nature of many of these no-traffic routes, dedicated cafes or restaurants directly along the trails are scarce. However, the Rotgüldensee Hut (Rotgüldenseehütte) is a prominent feature at 1,735 meters and offers refreshments and meals during its operating season. For other routes, it's advisable to carry sufficient food and water, and plan to visit eateries in nearby villages like Muhr or Tamsweg before or after your ride.
