Immediately after the railway underpass on the B42, you enter the gorge. It becomes quiet, and all you can hear are the chirping of birds and the babbling of the Pulsbach stream. The path is very beautiful, but in places it's very narrow and steep, requiring surefootedness. I wouldn't walk it if it's wet. Here, we also come across the signs for the Rheinsteig trail, which then guide us to Prath.

The Pulsbach not only has this one very beautiful waterfall, but also many other small and medium-sized waterfalls. In rainy years, like 2024 and winter 2025, there is a very audible splashing and murmuring here and it looks simply amazing. The steep cliffs are decorated with mosses and ferns, which are beautifully green even in winter. Simply a great tour along the stream!!

This single-track bridge was built in 1856 and expanded in the late 1950s with pedestrian walkways on both sides. It is an important traffic structure and, at the same time, a popular photo motif for visitors. The bridge spans the river at an angle of about 55 degrees and offers a beautiful view of the Rhine Falls and the surrounding landscape.

After the Wunschwasser waterfall, the route unfortunately does not continue above St. Goar at the moment. The hiking trail to Biebernheim is closed. You have to take the path directly to Rheinfels Castle.

a perfect break spot. The small waterfall is particularly pretty, in my opinion. The water is ALWAYS very clear.

The Rhine bridge at Laufen (also called Rheinfallbrücke) is a single-track railway bridge of the Rheinfallbahn, which spans the Rhine in Switzerland between Laufen-Uhwiesen and Neuhausen, above the Rhine Falls. The structure dates from 1856 and was extended at both sides with pedestrian walkways at the end of the 1950s. From the bridge, you have great views of the Rhine Falls.

While the Rhine Falls are monumental, the region offers many other impressive cascades. In France, the Saut du Doubs, a 27-meter high waterfall on the Franco-Swiss border, is a natural wonder formed by geological upheaval. The Hérisson Waterfalls in Jura are a series of over seven falls, some reaching 65 meters, offering fantastic hiking. You can also find the tranquil Lançot Waterfall in the Cirque de Consolation, and the dramatic Flumen Waterfall in Jura, known for its wild setting.
Yes, several waterfalls in the region are suitable for families. The Rhine Falls offer accessible viewing platforms and boat trips, making it a great family outing. The Hérisson Waterfalls provide a network of trails with various viewpoints, and the Glandieu Waterfall is easily accessible from a nearby car park, making it convenient for all ages.
Many waterfalls, including the Rhine Falls and Saut du Doubs, are particularly powerful and impressive in springtime due to snowmelt. However, the Pulsbach Waterfall area is recommended in every season, offering beauty year-round. Summer generally sees higher water flow at the Rhine Falls due to glacial melt, while autumn offers vibrant foliage.
The areas surrounding the waterfalls offer diverse outdoor activities. You can find numerous hiking trails, such as those around the Hérisson Waterfalls and the Kreuzbach Gorge. For cycling enthusiasts, there are many routes, including gravel biking and road cycling routes, that pass through scenic landscapes near the canal and its waterfalls. There are also easy hiking options for a more relaxed experience.
For those seeking adventure, the Flumen Waterfall in Jura is located deep within a wild corrie and evokes an "Indiana Jones" type of experience, accessible via various hiking trails of differing difficulty. The Kreuzbach Gorge also offers an adventurous and idyllic experience with smaller climbs and a waterfall, suitable for experienced hikers.
The regions around the Rhône-Rhine Canal are rich in natural beauty. You'll encounter deep gorges like the Kreuzbach Gorge and Morgenbachtal Gorge, lush forests, and scenic river valleys. The Saut du Doubs is set within a narrow, canyon-like valley, and the Hérisson Waterfalls are nestled in the "Lakes Region" of Jura, offering diverse landscapes.
Yes, particularly near the Rhine Falls. You can visit Laufen Castle, which offers impressive views of the falls and access to viewing platforms. On the opposite bank, Schloss Wörth is another historical site that provides a unique perspective of this natural wonder.
Visitors frequently praise the immense power and natural spectacle of the larger falls like the Rhine Falls and Saut du Doubs. The adventurous and idyllic experience of gorges like Kreuzbach Gorge, and the serene beauty of smaller cascades like Pulsbach Waterfall, are also highly appreciated. The opportunity for close-up views and immersive hiking experiences through lush natural environments is a common highlight.
Yes, the region boasts some impressive heights. The Charabotte Waterfall in Ain reaches an impressive 110 meters, making it one of France's highest. The Hérisson Waterfalls include cascades over 65 meters, such as the Eventail waterfall. The Rhine Falls, while not the highest, are Europe's largest in terms of water volume, at 23 meters high and 150 meters wide.
For most waterfall visits, especially those involving hiking, firm, handy footwear is recommended. Paths can be wet, uneven, or slippery. Layered clothing is advisable as temperatures can vary, and waterproof outerwear might be useful, especially near powerful falls where spray is common.
While the major falls are well-known, the region has many smaller, more secluded gems. The Lançot Waterfall in the beautiful wilderness of the Cirque de Consolation offers a tranquil setting. The Pulsbach Waterfall is described as a pretty little waterfall with a number of smaller cascades nearby, offering a rewarding experience away from larger crowds.
