The castle, featuring late Gothic and Renaissance elements, was built between 1563 and 1570 by the physician Anton Löw (1535–1584) following the great village fire of 1560. Appenzell became its owner in 1585. In 1688, the castle reverted to private ownership. The Neoclassical additions were made around 1840. The first Capuchin nuns moved into the castle in 1613, until they moved to the newly built convent next door in 1682.

At first glance, there's not much left to see, but the trained eye can still spot quite a few things. If you'd like to learn more about the castle, its history, and the archaeological finds, I recommend this 10-minute documentary: https://youtu.be/6AELk95D3Rw

Apart from a remnant of the wall and the castle hill, nothing remains to be seen. Only worthwhile for castle fans.

Beautiful, striking hill at around 1000 m, with the Clanx castle ruins visible on the top of the slope.

Very beautiful viewpoint over the Appenzell region with the Aplstein massif, with the Clanx castle ruins, also Appenzell Castle, mentioned in a document around 1219, owned by the Barons von Sax from the St. Gallen abbot Ulrich.

Beautiful Swiss town with many very interesting buildings 👌 It is the capital of the half-canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden! https://www.appenzell.ch/de/dorf-appenzell/sehens-wuerdigkeiten.html

A few chunks of wall and a metal plaque bear witness to the former castle. However, the castle hill, as well as the outer wall ring, is still easy to recognize the terrain. There are also two small fire pits there. The ascent is easily manageable by a small trampling pad.
