The Käshammer (Cheese Hammer) has stood in the Gelpe Valley since 1607, harnessing the power of the dammed Gelpe River for centuries. Initially a bone mill, it became a refining hammer in 1829, where pig iron was transformed into stainless steel. Because there was often insufficient water during the summer months to operate the hammer economically, the owner, Johann Hölter, built a tavern in the immediate vicinity at the end of the 19th century. This popular destination remained open until 2005. The hammer pond could be used for rowing and swimming. From the mid-20th century, the hammer itself served as a residence. Following extensive renovations by Peter Rudolph, it is now one of the best-preserved hammers in the Bergisches Land region. It is still used as a residence today, but is not open to the public. Nevertheless, it is a striking sight for hikers in the Gelpe Valley.

"...The stream was called Gelpe in 1600. From the 18th century onwards, the name Gelberbach or Gelperbach appears. The name is a compound of the hydronym -apa and the color yellow (Old High German gelo). ..." https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gelpe_(Morsbach)

I've never seen anything like it before. I think kids would have a lot of fun with it.

The benches are well positioned and invite you to rest. However, I find the shape rather medium. It's not really suitable for people around 1.80m tall.

It felt a bit like being in the Eifel region. Old houses, the odd workshop, and a few homes belonging to newcomers :-)
