The castle of Bütgenbach has a chequered history. Originally owned by the Counts of Limburg, it was destroyed several times over the centuries and always partially rebuilt. As early as the 13th century, the first destructions occurred, and later the complex suffered considerable damage, including from French troops in 1689. Subsequently, only individual parts were used for residential purposes, while large areas fell into disrepair or were demolished. With the extinction of the Monschau-Bütgenbach dynasty, the castle passed into the possession of other noble families before it was finally abandoned. Today, only a few remains of the former castle complex are preserved. Source: An information board located nearby.

The Bütgenbach farmstead is a protected monument consisting of four wings of quarry stone. It is located in the center of the village and is the oldest building in the area of the municipality of Bütgenbach. The estate can be traced back to the 15th century. The main parts of the farm buildings date from the 17th and 18th centuries. At that time, the Bütgenbach farmstead was a feudal estate of the County of Vianden. Later owners were the von Reiffenberg and von Baring families, who are commemorated by well-preserved coat-of-arms stones from 1623 (north wing) and 1754 (gate of the main facade on the east side). The tower on Rahmenberg hill above the market square is one of the city's most striking landmarks. The ruins can be reached in just a few minutes via a footpath leading to the "Half Moon," another viewpoint along the way. The Haller tower is commonly referred to as the castle's observation post because it offered a much better view of the Rur Valley. Other sources consider it an outer bailey protecting Reichenstein Abbey. Even in a drawing from 1543, it is depicted as a roofed, imposing tower. In 1570, its stones were used to repair the castle. Typically, the hilltop castle belongs to the category of early tower castles, which consisted of a massive residential and defensive tower. The tower stands atop a steeply sloping rock face. A thick wall on three sides completes the defensive design. The walls are up to 2.5 meters thick. It is assumed that the tower base was hewn out of the rock, as the eastern and northern bases have no edges. Source: https://www.eifel.info/a-haller-ruine

The castle fief, first mentioned in the 15th century, was partially destroyed in 1574/75 and rebuilt in 1621-24. The current four-winged complex dates largely from the 18th and 19th centuries. It is accessed through the two-storey gate building built in 1754, which bears the marital coat of arms of the owners at the time. Source: Information board

A very beautiful view of the castle, which appears like a fairytale palace on the ridge. In the summer months, this is probably the only place where you can get a distant view of Reinhardstein Castle through the light canopy of leaves.

"When Franz-Georg von Metternich-Ochsenhausen sold Reinhardstein Castle in 1812, its fate seemed sealed. From then on, the castle was used as a quarry. What was left of the building 150 years later thrilled Professor Overloop. The scholar turned the ruins over with stone starting in 1970 Re-erect the stone. He used comparable buildings in the nearby Eifel as a model. Today Reinhardstein Castle sits on the rocky spur as proudly as it did in its heyday. Inside the castle there is an impressive collection of furniture, weapons and tapestries that can be viewed ." https://www.ostbelgien.eu/de/fiche/castle/reinhardstein
