The Bütgenbach dam was built between 1929 and 1932. The main function of the dam is to regulate the course of the Warche river. This created the lake of Bütgenbach. It is a starting point for beautiful, popular hiking routes: for example, a 10-kilometer walk can be made around the lake.

Great to get make progress indeed, but I find it quite dull after 10 km. So if you are like me, take some "shortcuts" over the hills or go for other highlights along the path and then you will be happy to be back on the Vennbahn for some km ;)

The castle lord Reinhard von Weismes once had it built as a border fortification. If you want to take a break before or after the tour, you will find an idyllic picnic area on the banks of the Warche directly below the castle.
