May 29, 2024, Walmsley's Turn

In 2016, Jim Walmsley was on pace to set a new Western States 100 course record. His first time running the race, he had dropped his pacer by this point and was running on his own. He missed the turn up the trail and continued down the Quarry Trail until he reached Hwy 49 and realized his mistake. He went on to finish the race in 20th place and learn that crucial turn to be able to set the course record (14:09:28) and win it three times. This corner is now known as Walmsley's Turn. This photo is from a spot shortly before the turn.

Middle Fork of the American River is a popular spot for rafting, with many trails around it. Be careful swimming in some spots as the current is strong.

The American River Canyon Overlook Park is best known for its views right there from the park, but it is also a trailhead for hikers. There is quite a bit of parking, and there is an awesome skatepark as well.

Some swimming holes near the bridge. The flat trail near the bridge is short lived. Expect to start heading uphill or downhill along the route. Very little flat trail.

Are dogs allowed on the trails in Auburn State Recreation Area?

Yes, dogs are generally welcome in the Auburn SRA but must be on a leash no longer than six feet at all times. The trails are multi-use, so you'll be sharing them with hikers, bikers, and equestrians. Please be sure to bring water for your dog, especially on hot days, and always clean up after them.

What are the best family-friendly hikes in the area?

For an easy and accessible outing with family, the Robie Point Fuelbreak & Western States Trail loop is a great choice. It's a relatively short 2.5-mile (4.0 km) walk through shaded woodland. Another excellent option is the Quarry Trail, known for being a very flat and easy path that follows the American River, offering pleasant scenery without much strenuous climbing.

Are there any hikes with waterfalls in Auburn SRA?

Yes, the North Fork Dam on the American River creates a spectacular man-made waterfall when the river overflows its top, which is most common in late winter and early spring. The Clementine Trail to North Fork Dam is a popular hike that leads directly to a viewpoint of this unique feature.

What should I know about parking for hikes in the Auburn SRA?

Parking is available at various trailheads throughout the recreation area, but it can fill up quickly, especially on weekends. Many parking areas require a day-use fee. It's a good idea to arrive early to secure a spot and have cash or a card ready for payment. For the most current fee information and any potential closures, you can check the official Auburn SRA website.

When is the best time of year to hike in Auburn State Recreation Area?

Spring is a fantastic time to hike, as the weather is mild and the canyons are vibrant with wildflowers like Indian paintbrush and lupine. Fall also offers pleasant temperatures. Summers can be very hot, especially on exposed, south-facing canyon trails, so if you hike then, start early in the morning and bring plenty of water. Winter can be a great time to see the North Fork Dam overflowing.

Are there any strenuous, challenging hikes available?

Trails like Training Hill (also known as 'Kickass Hill') offer steep, sustained climbs that will test your fitness. The canyons provide numerous opportunities for significant elevation gain, making it a great place for those seeking a tough workout with rewarding views.

What are the best trails for views of the Foresthill Bridge?

Additionally, sections of the Clementine & Confluence Trail loop provide excellent vantage points of the bridge from within the American River canyon.

Can I go swimming in the American River?

Yes, swimming is a popular activity, especially during the warmer months. The river offers numerous swimming holes, particularly along the North and Middle Forks.
