The national monument De Helper is a polder mill on the eastern shore of the Paterswoldsemeer lake in the municipality of Haren, province of Groningen, in the hamlet of Nijveensterkolk. Here you can enjoy a lovely walk along the Paterswoldse Meer.

Is this Italy or Drenthe? The intense blue water, white sand and green conifers give this place a foreign feeling. But it is really our beautiful Drenthe

This is an oddity in this landscape of pine forests and bogs. The Gasselterveld used to be an mine, hence the "oddity" of light blue waters in a place where every other pond, lake, puddle is pitch black! This is a big, very deep (50 meter) pond where people come to swim and do all sorts of other water activities including scuba diving. https://www.staatsbosbeheer.nl/uit-in-de-natuur/recreatieterrein-gasselterveld

The Helper Mill is named after the Helpman polder that he drained from 1863. In the 1960s the mill was out of use and fell into disrepair. In 1971 it was moved to its current location on the Paterswoldsemeer. The mill is now used for drainage for water circulation of the ditches next to the lake. It is a wonderful place to enjoy the view over the lake on one of the benches on a sunny day.

Lovely lake in the woods for relaxing. A whole day or during a stop while cycling and/or walking. All facilities are available for a lunch or coffee stop.

Among the most popular lakes for recreation are Lake Gasselterveld, known for its bright blue water and large sandy beach, and The New Heavenly Realm ('t Nije Hemelriek), which features white sand, clear water, and family-friendly amenities. Both are excellent for swimming and relaxation.
Yes, several lakes are ideal for families. The New Heavenly Realm ('t Nije Hemelriek) offers shallow water, a sandy beach, and playground equipment. Ieberen Pond (Ieberenplas) is a natural play pond with a shallow end, perfect for small children and picnics. Loomeer also provides a sandy beach and gently sloping bottom, making it very suitable for kids.
For nature enthusiasts and birdwatchers, Holtveen and Davidsplassen are highly recommended. These heathland lakes are important for wildlife, particularly water birds. Holtveen has a viewing wall, and the Davidsplassen feature a bird hide where you might spot rare species like the little grebe or red-necked grebe.
While many swimming lakes have restrictions on dogs, Ellertshaar Forest Lake is a notable exception. Dogs are allowed there, even during the summer, making it an excellent choice for visitors with canine companions who want to enjoy a quieter forest setting with a small sandy beach.
The area around the lakes offers diverse outdoor activities. You can find numerous hiking trails, including routes like the 'Wandelroute Avontuurlijk Drentsche Aa' and 'Walking route Anlooërdiep'. For cyclists, there are road cycling routes such as the 'VAM-berg (Col du VAM)' and 'Gasselterveld Beach – Hunebed D19 and D20, Drouwen loop'. Mountain biking is also popular, with trails like the 'Gieten-Gasselte in Drenthe - Red route' and routes around Lake Gasselterveld. You can explore more options on the hiking guide, road cycling guide, and MTB guide for Nationaal Park Drentsche Aa.
If you prefer a more tranquil visit, Ellertshaar Forest Lake is an excellent choice, surrounded by forest with a small sandy beach. Ieberen Pond (Ieberenplas) also offers a natural and often quieter ambiance compared to busier recreational lakes.
Yes, some of the more popular recreational lakes offer facilities. The New Heavenly Realm ('t Nije Hemelriek) has a kiosk and a restaurant. Loomeer provides a toilet block and catering facilities during the high season. Ieberen Pond (Ieberenplas) also has a kiosk open on summer days for drinks and ice cream, along with toilets.
Lake Gasselterveld is unique for its striking bright blue, almost turquoise water, which gives it a distinctive 'foreign' character. This 65-hectare lake, a former sand mining area, is situated in a wooded setting and features a large sandy beach, making it popular for swimming, relaxing, and photography.
Visitors particularly enjoy the diverse experiences offered by the lakes, from the vibrant beach atmosphere and clear waters at spots like The New Heavenly Realm to the peaceful natural beauty and birdwatching opportunities at Holtveen and Davidsplassen. The combination of recreational swimming, relaxing sandy beaches, and serene nature observation within the beautiful Drentsche Aa landscape is highly appreciated.
Absolutely! Ieberen Pond (Ieberenplas) is described as a perfect spot for a picnic on the sand. Ellertshaar Forest Lake also offers ample space for picnicking in its quiet, forested surroundings.
While the lakes are beautiful year-round for strolls, especially in spring and fall, the summer months are ideal for swimming and enjoying the full range of recreational facilities. However, popular spots like 't Nije Hemelriek can get busy during warm summer days.
