The Romanesque Saint Magnus Church was built around 1100. The church is named after Magnus, bishop of Trani, who was canonized after his martyrdom. Research by archaeologist Albert van Giffen has shown that wooden predecessors of this church already stood on this site.[1] The church was originally a private church of the bishop of Utrecht, who administered justice here. Later, sessions of the Etstoel, the highest Drenthe court, were held in this church.[2] On the walls are 13th-century frescoes depicting scenes from the life of Mary: the Annunciation, the Visitation, the birth of Christ, and the Flight into Egypt.[2] The choir dates from the 14th century. The church tower is a saddleback tower and dates from the 12th century. In the tower hangs a bell from 1732 by Jan Albert de Grave and Nicolaus Mulder. The pointed spire was placed in 1857, and the tower received stepped gables in 1894. (Source: Wikipedia)

Old village church dating back to the 9th century. The Gospel has been preached on the site of St. Magnus Church since the 9th century. Excavations by Professor A. E. van Giffen have shown that the current church building was preceded by a series of wooden structures, likely built in the 9th and 10th centuries. It is a very beautiful route, beautiful viewpoints! But make sure you can jump ditches or wear waders. Around Oudemolendiep you have to make several jumps to be able to continue following the path and regularly stood up to your ankles in water/mud. Definitely not an easy route.
