Stayed at one of the local pubs, was good but their internet connection was non-existent, had to pay for a 24hr hotspot with EE

Car park at Square Corner, get there early or it will be full. Great track up the side of Black Hambleton where you can access Arden Great Moor, or simply keep going south towards Sneck Yate. Awesome views from the top.

Quintessential North Yorkshire village, very picturesque with good amenities and access points to the northwest of the NYM National Park. However, can be very congested with cars so parking is difficult. Drive north and park at Cod Beck Reservoir, then add Osmotherley to your hiking route. Lots of roads and public footpaths to choose from.

Left for the local wildlife, this reservoir's banks can be quite overgrown in summer, making it difficult to see.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any dog-friendly walks around Leake?

Yes, the North York Moors are generally welcoming to dogs. The open moorland and woodland trails provide great environments for walking with your dog. However, always be mindful of livestock grazing on the moors and keep your dog on a lead where required, especially during bird nesting season (typically March to July). Many local pubs in villages like Osmotherley are also dog-friendly.

What are the best options for family-friendly hikes?

For families, look for shorter, less strenuous routes. The paths around Cod Beck Reservoir are a good choice, offering relatively flat terrain and lovely scenery. These walks are manageable for younger children and provide a great introduction to the landscapes of the North York Moors.

Can I find any circular walks starting from Leake?

Absolutely. Many of the trails in the area are designed as circular routes, allowing you to start and end in the same place without retracing your steps. A great example is the Big Wood, Oak Dale – Osmotherley Village loop from Thimbleby, which takes you through varied scenery including woodlands and a charming village.

Are there any walks that include a pub stop?

Yes, several routes pass through or near villages with traditional pubs. The village of Osmotherley, for instance, is a popular hub for hikers and features several pubs perfect for a mid-hike lunch or a post-walk pint. You can easily plan a route that incorporates a stop there.

What is the parking situation for hikes near Leake?

Parking is available at several key starting points for hikes in the region. Popular spots include the car park at Cod Beck Reservoir and various lay-bys near trailheads. Villages like Osmotherley and Nether Silton also offer some on-street or designated parking, but it's advisable to arrive early on weekends and holidays as spaces can fill up quickly.

Are there any trails with good views in the Leake area?

Definitely. The region's position on the edge of the North York Moors means many hikes offer expansive views. Trails that ascend onto the moorland, such as those climbing Black Hambleton, provide panoramic vistas across the Vale of Mowbray. Even lower-level walks can offer beautiful scenes of the surrounding dales and reservoirs.

Can I get to the hiking trails using public transport?

Accessing trailheads directly via public transport can be challenging in this rural part of North Yorkshire. Bus services are limited and may not run directly to the start of most routes. The most practical way to explore the area is by car. If relying on public transport, your best option is to travel to a larger nearby town and take a taxi to your starting point.

What kind of scenery can I expect on walks around the reservoirs?

Walks around the local reservoirs, like Cod Beck and Upper Oakdale, offer tranquil and picturesque scenery. You can expect well-defined paths that circle the water, often passing through a mix of peaceful woodlands and open areas with views across the water to the surrounding hills. These routes are particularly beautiful and are often teeming with birdlife.

How many hiking trails are available around Leake?

There are over 150 hiking routes to explore around Leake on komoot. These range from easy strolls to challenging full-day hikes, covering the varied terrain of the western North York Moors, including moorland, forests, and reservoir paths.

What do other hikers say about the trails in this region?

The area is highly regarded by the komoot community, with an average rating of 4.7 stars. Hikers often praise the stunning moorland views, the tranquility of the wooded dales, and the well-maintained network of paths. The variety of routes, from gentle reservoir loops to more strenuous moorland climbs, is also a frequently mentioned highlight.

Are there any long-distance walks that pass near Leake?

Yes, the Cleveland Way National Trail passes close to the area, particularly near Osmotherley. You can easily join a section of this famous long-distance path for a day's hike, experiencing a part of its dramatic and varied route through the North York Moors.

What should I pack for a day hike in the North York Moors?

For a day hike, essentials include sturdy walking boots, waterproof clothing (as the weather can change quickly on the moors), and extra layers. Also, be sure to carry enough water and snacks, as there are few facilities on the trails themselves.

A map and compass, or a fully charged phone with the komoot app, are crucial for navigation, especially on the open moorland where paths can be less distinct.
