Thimbleby Bank Forest Path

Highlight • Forest

My photos don't do this track justice, as they are seem too bright. On the day it felt much dimmer inside the forest, which gave it quite an atmosphere. The track is very pleasant to walk on with tired feet, essentially a soft pine needle mattress. The public footpath snakes north into Big Wood and then pops you out in Oak Dale and is definitely worth adding to your route. Very quiet.

Big Wood, Oak Dale

Highlight • Forest

Public footpath from Thimbleby Bank to Big Wood feels off the beaten track, with sections ranging from coniferous plantation to thin tracks through dense vegetation and then opening out into Silver Birch woodland, much of it littered with rhododendron bushes. A real gem to find.

Upper Oakdale Reservoir

Highlight • Structure

This little and picturesque reservoir is no longer used by the water company Yorkshire Water for water supply; having reduced the amount of water in it, they nonetheless left it to exist and thrive. A beautiful place, and the forested slopes on the other side of the reservoir are truly lovely.

Square Corner might just be a car park, but this is a car park to end all car parks! On Thimbleby Moor, with views of the Black Hambleton hill to the south and with beautiful views down the valley to the town of Osmotherley to the west. Life is good again.

Cleveland Way at Black Hambleton

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

Car park at Square Corner, get there early or it will be full. Great track up the side of Black Hambleton where you can access Arden Great Moor, or simply keep going south towards Sneck Yate. Awesome views from the top.
