Lovely little cafe with friendly staff and great sea views. It's open from March to the first week in October (usually closes for the season after Shetland Wool Week has finished). Serves up big meals like fish & chips as well as lighter lunchtime snacks such as jacket potatoes. Lots of lovely cakes too - can recommend the Victoria sponge!

Yes, Northmavine has several easier trails perfect for a family outing. A great option is the Esha Ness Lighthouse loop from Tangwick, which offers dramatic cliff views over a relatively short and manageable distance of under 3 miles (5 km).
Dogs are generally welcome on trails, but it's essential to be responsible. Northmavine is an active crofting area with free-roaming sheep. You must keep your dog on a lead at all times to protect livestock, especially during lambing season in spring and early summer.
Many trails in Northmavine are loops, allowing you to enjoy a varied walk without retracing your steps. For a moderate challenge with fantastic coastal scenery, consider the Calder's Geo – Holes of Scraada loop from Tangwick. This route showcases some of the area's most impressive geological features.
The hike to Ronas Hill, Shetland's highest point, involves challenging and varied terrain. You can expect to cross boggy, heather-covered moorland which can be very wet underfoot. The final ascent is steep and covered in a unique arctic-alpine landscape of stony, barren ground known as fellfield. Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots are essential.
Absolutely. The Eshaness area is famous for its volcanic geology. Hikes here will take you past incredible features like the Grind o' da Navir (a natural sea arch), the Holes o' Scraada (collapsed sea caves), and Calder's Geo (a deep, dramatic sea inlet). These formations are a testament to the power of the North Atlantic.
The hike to the Lang Ayre is considered strenuous. While the route along the clifftops offers spectacular views, the final descent to the beach is very steep and involves scrambling down a rough, boulder-strewn gully. This part of the trail requires confidence on unstable ground and should only be attempted by experienced hikers in good weather.
Shetland's weather is famously changeable, so layering is key. Always wear sturdy, waterproof hiking boots as trails can be boggy. A waterproof and windproof jacket is essential, even on a sunny day. It's also wise to pack a hat, gloves, and an extra warm layer, as conditions can change rapidly.
