Old Canal Bridge over the Lippe

Highlight • Bridge

The old route of the Dortmund-Ems canal between Datteln and Olfen is a structural masterpiece. Opened in 1899, the canal overpass of the Lippe is particularly striking. Highly recommended.

Trail Reviews

Barbara 🚴‍♀️
August 5, 2024, Barbara war Fährfrau 😃💪🏼Vom Wasser bis zur Heide Tour Olfen - Haltern am See –

Highly recommended tour. Tip: don't go on the weekend if you want to operate the ferry yourself. We were alone today. I can well imagine that it would be very busy otherwise on the paths and on the ferry.

Great route, but the ferry 🛶 no longer operates. And don't go on a public holiday 😱

Super nice tour. Tires should be a bit wider.

A beautiful, varied bike ride. I started at Lake Ternscher, which is unfortunately closed due to an algae infestation.

At reservoirs, Lippe and canals from and to Olfen. On this bike-friendly route we experienced beautiful views over the Halterner and Hullern reservoirs. This route leads comfortably along several canals, far away from traffic, you come across the idyllic Lippe several times and follow a section of the beautiful Alte Fahrt with a magnificent canal bridge over the Lippe. Start our tour at the 'Alte Fahrt' from Olfen along the canal until the Dortmund-Ems Canal and Wesel-Datteln Canal meet at the largest water junction in the world. Continue through the Lippe floodplains to Haltern am See, from there cycling on the Steverland route, the 'Alter Postweg' Hulllern - Olfen through the Steveraue nature reserve back to Olfen. Alte Fahrt history The Alte Fahrt is the name given to a disused section of the Dortmund-Ems Canal near Olfen. The 8,650-meter-long section stretches from the Datteln canal junction (canal kilometer 21.5) to beyond Olfen (30.3 km) and is accompanied by a footpath and cycle path. The Dortmund-Ems Canal was opened in 1899. In the area of the Alte Fahrt, the canal was equipped with particularly high embankments, higher than twelve meters at 5,600 meters and higher than nine meters at 2,775 meters. In addition, five canal overpasses were built in this area, three of which were road crossings and crossings of the Lippe and Stever. From 1929 to 1937, the first new, fast route was built from Datteln towards Lüdinghausen. In total, the Dortmund-Ems Canal received eight "second crossings". They had become necessary in order to accommodate the increased volume of traffic with larger types of ships. In particular, the bridge structures, which did not allow ships to pass each other, had previously delayed the rapid transport of goods. The construction was also a job creation measure by the National Socialists, completed by prisoners from the Börgermoor concentration camp after they seized power. A very relaxing tour through the Münsterland region. From Olfen to Haltern am See and back to Olfen. Plenty of greenery, plenty of water, and, for the most part, a very quiet 🦻 tour.

Beautiful tour along forest paths, past fields and the lake.

Today we drove this whole tour in the best weather, there was something of everything, on Lake Haltner, on the railway line and along the canal and through the beautiful landscape. The stop after so many km was really deserved. We had kohldampf. The possibility to stop and the tour is really recommended. During the week, the tour is easy to drive.
