Hiking

On this hike, you will circle the Wißberg, the second-highest elevation in Rheinhessen, also called the „Tafelberg" (Table Mountain) due to its plateau. Between the sweeping views, the tour tells of wine, geology, and culture. On a clear day, your gaze over the hilly landscape reaches as far as the Hunsrück and the Palatinate.

Along the way, some special places set accents. At the Sprendlinger Arena, five stone columns stand in a semicircular formation, along with a panoramic view and a 'table of wine'. At the Rundidum, a glass pane arranged in a half-hexagon with engraved places, you can geographically orient yourself to the vastness of Rheinhessen. A small grove with rare plants and a traditional orchard are also on the path, and the summit cross of the Wißberg marks one of the most beautiful viewpoints on the loop.

Near Gau-Weinheim, the Seminar Pavilion offers a piece of modern architecture in the vineyards. The Kreuzkapelle (Cross Chapel) on the way to Gau-Bickelheim is another landmark of the area. The start and finish are directly at a parking lot. As the loop leads through the Wißberg nature reserve, please stay on the marked paths.

Seminar Pavilion Gau-Weinheim

Highlight • Structure

This simple reinforced concrete structure, called the "Seminarpavillon", was designed by architect Christoph Perka; the floor area is 30 square meters. Wire mesh, filled with regional stone, enlivens the walls of the 3.30-meter-high pavilion. It is intended to serve as a resting and relaxation area and invite contemplation or celebration. The small house is not a classic vineyard house, but is designed more modernly. With its natural stone elements, it fits well into the landscape. The Seminarpavillon cost a total of 45,000 euros.

Today I 'hiwwelt' the last Hiwweltour. So off to Gau-Bickelheim. Super easy to reach from our place by train. The starting point of the tour is right at the train station. The train runs every hour. Secured a bottle of rosé at Weingut Schnabel and off we went.
Unfortunately, Komoot has problems saving my photos. Out of 20 pictures, only …

Today's "mud battle" took place on the Wißberg (270.2 m above sea level), the "white mountain" at whose foot several villages have settled. I've never conquered it from Gau-Bickelheim, but today my dear friend Natalie wanted to hike the future "Hiwweltour Wißberg" trail. The official start of the route, which will open in April or May, is just one railway …

Gau-Bickelheim is a municipality in the Alzey-Worms district. It belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde Wöllstein and is located in Germany's largest wine-growing region, Rheinhessen. In Rheinhessen, the land of a thousand hills, there are also premium trails, so-called "Hiwweltouren". Since the summer of 2026, 5 new Hiwweltouren have been certified. One of them is the "Wißberg" tour.

After Silke's first week of vacation literally "fell into the water", blue skies and sun were forecast again for today. However, the DWD also issued a warning for gusts of wind. Therefore, we looked for a tour without a forest and remembered the new Hiwweltour in Gau-Bickelheim, which opened at the end of April. For our followers from the north …

Since we were doing volunteer work this afternoon, only a short hike nearby was possible this morning.

My sweetheart had read in the newspaper that a new hiking trail was planned in Gau Bickelheim and that the funding approval had been granted. She copied the route from the grant application and planned it on komoot. Oddly enough, some paths marked …

It took a long time for the funding for the new Hiwwel Tours to be approved, and now the final phase of implementation is finally beginning. Five new Hiwwel Tours are scheduled to open in 2026, including the Wißberg Hiwwel Tour. Using the planning map, we tried to walk the route today as it will roughly look next year. In …
