This section of the Stockalper Trail offers impressive alpine flora against a majestic mountain backdrop and is a true experience. The trail begins at Schallberg and descends along the slope path, built by Stockalper in 1667 and offering impressive views of the Saltina Gorge. The trail winds its way through two hairpin bends to the Chalchofe and through the Chräjubielwald forest to the hamlet of Brei. Across open meadowland, along the so-called Roman Trail, you reach the town of Brig and its Stockalper Castle.

During the hike, you'll have the opportunity to explore the late medieval barn, the Stockalper Castle, and the Bahnhofstrasse in Brig-Glis. The start and end points of the tour are easily accessible by public transport. Enjoy the magnificent views of Brig-Glis and Naters as you hike through the impressive mountain backdrop.

Stockalperweg at Gfaltewald

Late Medieval Barn

Highlight • Historical Site

The log building, raised on stilts, stands on a base of horizontal and vertical beams on a foundation wall. The entrance to the barn, with its awning boards, is located in the western eave wall. Above the entrance, the blocks are moved forward by one width of the pole (foreground protection), and the slightly raised gable roof forms a canopy. The tympanum structure consists of a ridge column (heath beam), into which the beams of the tympanum field are embedded in one corner. Based on this ancient construction of the tympanum, the nave was probably built before 1500.

Stockalper Palace

The Stockalper Palace is perhaps the most imposing palace of the 17th century that can be found in Switzerland. Kaspar Stockalper was the builder and owner of his time, hence the name.
