Untermarkt (Lower Market) and the Romanesque House, Gelnhausen

Highlight • Historical Site

Gelnhausen was founded in 1170 by the Hohenstaufen Emperor Frederick I, nicknamed Barbarossa. The Romanesque House on the Untermarkt dates from this period, but the construction of the Marienkirche, located above, also began at the end of the 12th century.
Once you have managed the considerable climb to the Untermarkt, numerous cafés, restaurants, and pubs invite you to take a short or long break.

Kinzigtal Cycle Path

Highlight • Cycleway

It's nice to have a cycle path next to the motorway, but you don't have to. But the problem remains throughout the Kinzigtal that there are hardly any quiet corners due to the ICE route and the A66.

The bridge in the forest

Highlight • Bridge

The bridge is near the Sehmenbach spring and is a nice photo opportunity. It is always a bit cooler here than on the rest of the way.

View of Lißberg Castle

Highlight • Viewpoint

The castle was probably built in the 12th century by the "Lords of Liebesberg", who were first mentioned in documents in 1222. The castle is located on a hill that may have been the end of a former lava flow. The round keep with its conical tip is visible from afar. It is affectionately nicknamed the "Lißberger Krautfass" by locals. From above, the view sweeps far over the village and the Nidder.
The castle complex presents visitors with a high shield wall three meters thick that closes off the complex to the northeast. The entrance to the Zwinger, which was secured with a moat and drawbridge until the 18th century, is at the southeast end of the wall. Through the Zwinger you come to the wide forecourt in the south of the castle complex, where the tithe barn and granaries used to stand.
Another archway leads into the actual castle courtyard, which is almost trapezoidal in shape. The former castle buildings have fallen into disrepair, only the massive tower with a diameter of nine meters and a height of 27 meters is well preserved. Its wall is about three and a half meters thick. The staircase runs through the walls to the top of the tower. The entrance to the tower is nine meters high. Originally it could only be reached via a drawbridge from the residential building that was attached to the shield wall. After this building collapsed in 1824, an external staircase was added to the tower in 1865. The Lißberg community hall is now located on the site of the old residential building.
The castle grounds are freely accessible.
