Schafhof Maulbronn

Highlight • Historical Site

At the Schafhof you stand on the area from which the foundations and buildings of the Romanesque buildings of Maulbronn Monastery originated. 200 million year old stones were removed from here and used as natural building material. This area was then used to raise sheep for the monastery brothers. At the time, it was the largest wool supplier in the world. It also supplied the basic material for parchment, which was used for church windows.
Today, there is a modern art gallery, a shop for interesting antiques and the local museum, which is run on a voluntary basis, in historic buildings. All three sites are open every Sunday afternoon in summer and every second Sunday afternoon in winter. You can find more information online under the keyword Schafhof Maulbronn.

The World Heritage site Maulbronn Monastery is considered one of the best-preserved medieval monastery complexes north of the Alps. The Cistercian character of the architecture and the surrounding cultural landscape are almost perfectly preserved. Therefore, a visit should include not only the monastery itself but also the surrounding area, perhaps on a short hike or a bike tour.

April 22, 2024,Maulbronn-Schmie: Tiefer See, Rossweiher, Kloster Maulbronn, Hohenackersee [UNESCO Welterbe]
Maulbronn is considered to be the most completely preserved medieval monastery complex north of the Alps. The Cistercians began construction in the middle of the 12th century - over the centuries a huge monastery town developed. The monastery has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993.

Descent into the quarry difficult to find. Muddy and steep. But worth it. Maulbronn totally empty.

Today we're off to the land of 1000 hills again, because the Maulbronn Museum Trail -MB4- was on the itinerary.

From Maulbronn Monastery through the forest to the half-timbered village of Schmie, along vineyards, through the Roßweiher nature reserve, past the Tiefer See bathing lake, and back to the historic half-timbered houses of the Schafhof farm in Maulbronn.
