Tour du Roy, Sainte-Livrade-sur-Lot

Highlight • Historical Site

According to the sources, the tower would be a remainder of a castle built by Richard-Heart-of-Lion, a tower of the enclosure of the city.

Baron de Madaillan held the town of Sainte-Livrade in paréage with the king. Historians have more likely seen it as a fortified house built by a local lord near the city ramparts at the end of the 13th century or the beginning of the 14th century to participate in its defence.

The site of Madaillan having passed to the Fossat d'Aiguillon family, Sainte-Livrade was part of their property, then of their heirs.

During the Revolution, the tower became the property of the municipality, which turned it into a prison.

Church composed of a two-bay nave with a bell tower with two arches to the west and a square choir flanked by two corner buttresses to the east. The roof and the frames have fallen, the walls are cracked and partially ruined. The traces of an old porch remain along the 1st south bay.

From the 12th century, this place was the seat of a commandery of the Templars, called Le Temple-du-Breuil. The whole was donated to the Hospitallers of Saint-Jean-de-Jerusalem when the Order of the Temple was abolished and was then dependent on the Grand Priory of Toulouse. The nave was built in the 13th century. The choir dates from the 16th century. In 1572, a fire partially destroyed it. It is still not rebuilt in 1603.
Reconstruction work was carried out in the 17th century. The arcaded bell tower was built in brick during this period, while a large part of the walls were raised. The 18th-19th centuries saw the construction of two important buttresses on the west facade, raised to contain the slope of the bell tower.

This Greenway is built on the left bank of the Lot, mostly on the right-of-way of an old railway line. It is made up of an old “urban” part in Sainte-Livrade (4km), and a recent part (2016) connecting the first to Le Temple-sur-Lot, in the countryside, and passing to the natural site of Griffoul .
The Departmental Council plans to extend the Voie Verte to Castelmoron-sur-Lot.
When this junction has been created, the route of the Lot Valley Véloroute (V86), which today takes roads on the other bank, can be switched to the Voie Verte on the left bank.
In 2018 the Voie Verte was extended to Ste-Livrade - with passage under the D911 - by 5km towards Villeneuve-sur-Lot to join the Voie Verte in Villeneuvois.

Notre-Dame Church

The chapel of the commandery also served as a parish church, and was located in the Fort; the commander appointed to the cure. The church was rebuilt in the 16th century by reusing the south wall of the old commandery building to the north. In 1668, it consisted of a nave of 3 bays with bell tower and a south chapel of 2 bays, built during a very close campaign and whose vaults rest on the same pillars. No complaint was made after the Wars of Religion. The half bay of the choir has moldings from the end of the 16th or the beginning of the 17th century. In 1857, the south vessel was increased by a west bay under the direction of L. Vigier, architect in Villeneuve-sur-Lot. In 1873, the architect Gélas redone the roof. In 1895, restoration and expansion work was carried out by Gallet, entrepreneur, under the supervision of Bouillet, architect in Marmande: construction of the bell tower, the narthex with the chapel of the baptismal font (caps pasticant those of Saint-Jean-de -Balerme), sacristies, with an additional bay to the east; the diocesan edifices committee requested a reduction in the project (height, decoration of the spire, removal of the gable of the porch and of the statue at the top).
