According to sources, the tower is said to be a remnant of a castle built by Richard the Lionheart, a tower of the city walls.
The baron of Madaillan held the town of Sainte-Livrade in parage with the king. Historians have more probably seen it as a fortified house built by a local lord near the town ramparts at the end of the 13th century or the beginning of the 14th century to participate in its defense.
The Madaillan estate passed to the Fossat d'Aiguillon family, and Sainte-Livrade became part of their property, then that of their heirs.
