Brig

Saltina Bridge, Brig
In 1993, the Saltina, a stream from the Simplon region that flows into the Rhone in Brig, burst its banks, causing one of the worst storm disasters in Switzerland. The "jumping" (lat. saltare) brought with it huge amounts of rubble, which was subsequently deposited throughout the city center and damaged countless buildings and their facilities up to ground floor level. In the area of the train station and the Rhonesand district, the dammed water created a bizarre lake landscape that had to be navigated by boat. Two people were killed; given the massive natural eruption, there could have been many more.
Since then, Brig-Glis has commemorated the tragic event every year on September 24th with a memorial service. The flood hit Brig-Glis unexpectedly, as it had been more than 70 years since the Saltina last made its unbridled power felt. The clearance and repair work, which was supported by a great deal of solidarity across Switzerland, lasted around a year.
The result is, among other things, a newly designed city center, which had been badly damaged with the exception of the old castle. At the same time, the opportunity was taken to significantly enlarge the area around the town square and make it traffic-free; today this area is very busy. Events of all kinds are held here regularly and the weekly farmers' market on Saturdays is an integral part of the cityscape.
A new bridge was built over the Saltina, which can be raised by the weight of the water using a hydraulic system. Since then, the innovative bridge has protected the residential area of Brig-Glis together with a number of other flood protection measures.

Stockalper Palace

Highlight • Castle

The Stockalper Palace is perhaps the most imposing palace of the 17th century that can be found in Switzerland. Kaspar Stockalper was the builder and owner of his time, hence the name. He was a comparatively unscrupulous early capitalist of his day, who had no shame in bribing, cheating, and buying or selling anything that promised him any profit. It was the envy of his fellow human beings that at some point drove them to exile him from his estate. - In addition to the moral of the story, the really impressive castle remained, which regularly presents itself from its most beautiful side in the sunset and is clearly worth a photo. Incidentally, the best view of this is from the park in front.

St. Sebastian's Chapel, Brig

Highlight • Religious Site

Sebastian's Chapel, Brig
The Sebastian Chapel was built in 1636/37 by one of the Prismeller Bodmers. The strong influence of Italian models cannot be denied.
The chapel is a tower-like central building with an octagonal layout and a recessed, polygonal choir. The pyramid roof is topped by a lantern. The portal porch is gabled with a ridge turret and is supported by two pairs of columns. On the front side there are niches with late Gothic statues of St. Leodegar and St. Jerome. The statues may have been taken from a previous building.
Inside there is an altarpiece painted by Lorenz Ritz in 1837 with a depiction of St. Sebastians and a city view of Brig.

Brig flood (1993)
In September 1993, several weeks of sustained precipitation were followed by three days of very intense precipitation, which led to the Saltina in Brig overflowing its banks on September 24th. In retrospect, the meteorologists determined that no major precipitation and runoff values had been measured in the Saltina catchment area during the entire 20th century.
Damage incurred
The flooding left behind meter high sand and debris on streets, squares and in buildings. Two women lost their lives. Damage balance of the storm in the Upper Valais area: over CHF 650 million.
The bottleneck of the river course was right in the center: debris and driftwood accumulated at the bridge in Brig-Glis and led to a blockage. The Saltina overflowed its banks and deposited meters of mud and rubble in the center of the village.
Activities
The measures taken afterwards consisted of the construction of two bed load chambers in the catchment area of the stream, the elevation of the bank walls on the canal and, as a core element, the construction of an automatic lift bridge at the neuralgic point in Brig-Glis.
