Bandama Natural Monument viewpoint

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Bandama Natural Park (Spanish: Monumento Natural de Bandama) is a protected landscape area in the northeast of the island of Gran Canaria, in the Spanish province of Las Palmas. It consists of two clearly defined units: the mountain peak Pico de Bandama and the Caldera de Bandama.

The name Bandama is not of Spanish origin. It is derived from the Flemish trader Daniel Van Damme, who ran a very successful winery in the Caldera in the 16th century. This man's will is the first written documentation of viticulture in this area of the island. The wine presses, which are still partially preserved today, and the associated fermentation tanks (lagares), in which the grapes were mashed, are among the oldest of their kind on Gran Canaria.

Nice vegetation down there. I was amazed at how green it is in the crater.

A hike in the volcanic crater is interesting - just keep in mind that you have to go up again later. We were there in the midday heat, which was "suboptimal" for the climb ...

Bandama Caldera

Highlight • Volcano

Probably the most recognizable caldera of Gran Canaria. Here the volcanic past is still almost noticeable. At the top of the entrance there are descriptive information boards about the origin. It is worth the way to the bottom of the caldera. About half of the descent comes a great viewing platform. At the very bottom of the caldera are still old ruins, which are currently being rebuilt. It is also worth paying attention to the caldera at the top of the crater rim on the narrow path. Great views of the caldera. At first the way looks worse than it actually is and is predominantly easy to walk on. Only at about two places it is a bit arduous, as it goes on slippery ground (loose lava granules) quite steeply uphill.

Caldera de Bandama Crater Walk

Highlight • Volcano

After the end point of the walk do not immediately go back up. Walk right past the finca and then immediately left in the direction of another abandoned house.
Then you walk a small circle down through the crater, you come back to the Finca.
