The pond at National Botanic Gardens, Kilmacurragh is actually a surviving fragment of a much older monastic lake. In early Christian times there was a monastery on the site, and the water was used as a fish pond by the monks. Over centuries the original lake shrank, leaving the smaller ornamental pond you see today.
