Ghost Forest

Begin your easy hike to Proposal Rock, a coastal route spanning 1.9 miles (3.0 km) with a minimal elevation gain of just 15 feet (5 metres). This gentle walk takes about 45 minutes, offering a relaxing experience along the shore. You'll encounter the iconic sea stack, Proposal Rock, rising from the ocean and adorned with trees and moss. The terrain is primarily beach, providing open views of the Pacific. Look for the ancient Sitka spruce stumps of the Neskowin Ghost Forest emerging from the sand, adding a unique, mysterious atmosphere to your journey.

To start your adventure, park near the Neskowin Beach State Recreation Site. Be prepared to cross a creek to reach the beach, which might mean taking off your shoes depending on water levels. It is crucial to check local tide tables before you go; the best time to explore the Ghost Forest and the tide pools around Proposal Rock is during low tide. This ensures you can safely access these natural wonders. While the beach walk is straightforward, climbing the rock itself is a more difficult task, recommended only at the lowest tides and in dry conditions.
