The Slovenské banské múzeum has been operating since 1900 and is one of the oldest mining museums in Slovakia. The institution presents the history of silver and gold mining, thanks to which Banská Štiavnica became one of the most important mining towns in Central Europe.
The museum consists of several facilities located in the city, including the Old Castle, mineralogical exhibitions, and an open-air mining museum with an underground route in a former mine. Visitors can see original mining machinery, tools, and drainage systems used from the Middle Ages to the 20th century.
