Hotel Grand Matej is located in a historic building from the early 20th century, a few minutes from the historic center of Banská Štiavnica. The hotel was named in honor of Matej Kornel Hell - an 18th-century constructor of mining equipment and one of the most important engineers associated with the city.
The building has retained many elements of the old spa-urban architecture characteristic of Banská Štiavnica from the Austro-Hungarian period. The hotel's interiors refer to the mining history, for which the city was famous for centuries.
