The Falls Overlook and John Cummins Loop offers a delightful, varied hiking experience through woodlands in Cummins Falls State Park. You'll wind along paths that provide stunning elevated views of the impressive 75-foot Cummins Falls, which cascades into a natural swimming pool. The natural surface of the John Cummins Trail also gives you glimpses of the Blackburn Fork River and historical mill remnants, making for a scenic and engaging walk.
This easy 0.8-mile (1.2 km) loop has a modest 74 feet (23 metres) of elevation gain and can be completed in approximately 20 minutes, making it a perfect option for beginners or families. While the Falls Overlook Trail is notably ADA accessible upon request, remember that accessing the base of the falls requires a separate, more strenuous hike through the gorge, which needs a special permit. For the best views of the waterfall, consider visiting during the winter months when the trees are less dense.
Cummins Falls State Park, named "State Park of the Year" in 2021, is celebrated for its natural beauty in the rolling hills of Jackson County, Tennessee. The land around the falls has a rich history, having been owned by the Cummins family since 1825, who operated water-powered mills on Blackburn Fork. This trail offers a fantastic way to experience a piece of this natural and historical gem.
