The Gevangenenpoort or “Eikelpoort” was part of the city walls, but also served as a prison. Between 1589 and 1603, at least 6 alleged witches reside in these cells.

The Gevangenenpoort is the last remaining city gate of the original five inner gates of the first ramparts of Lier. The gate was erected in 1375 and from the 16th century to 1930 it served as a city prison. The bars still point to this old function. The Gevangenenpoort is originally Gothic in style.

The Gevangenenpoort was erected in 1375 as part of the first city walls. This gate is the only remaining part of the oldest defensive wall with 5 inner gates.
From the 16th century to 1930, the gate served as a prison, hence its current name.
The Gevangenenpoort, formerly Eeckelpoort or Eikelpoort, is a Gothic city gate, later modified with classicistic features (± 1728).
On the Begijnhofstraat side, the original pointed arch has been preserved. On both sides there is a niche with the statues of Saint Roch and Saint Margaret.
