The Oregon Coast Trail: Cape Kiwanda Loop offers a truly unique coastal hiking experience, centered around the impressive Great Dune. As you climb the steep, loose sand, you'll be rewarded with expansive views of the Pacific Ocean, the distinctive Haystack Rock (Chief Kiawanda Rock), and the dramatic sculpted headland of Cape Kiwanda. Keep an eye out for tunneled coves and vibrant tide pools when the tide is out, revealing marine life like sea anemones and starfish.
This moderate 5.8-mile (9.3 km) hike involves 339 feet (103 metres) of elevation gain and typically takes about 2 hours and 28 minutes to complete. The trailhead is conveniently located in Pacific City, making it easy to access. No permits are needed, but it's crucial to stay on marked paths and behind safety fences due to unstable cliffs and high waves, ensuring a safe and enjoyable visit.
Cape Kiwanda is the southernmost point of the scenic Three Capes Scenic Route and is renowned for its geological formations, including both basaltic and sandstone components. Beyond hiking, the area is popular for hang gliding and kite flying, adding to the vibrant atmosphere. You might also spot diverse wildlife, from seabirds like pelicans and cormorants to squirrels and rabbits.
