Embark on the Buck Mt from Hogtown Trail, a moderate hike covering 4.2 miles (6.8 km) with a total elevation gain of 1051 feet (320 metres). You can expect to complete this route in about 2 hours and 15 minutes. The trail starts gently on an old woods road, winding through a mix of northern upland trees and conifers before becoming steeper as you ascend. You will cross brooks and pass impressive boulders on your way to the summit, where you are rewarded with panoramic views of Lake George, including Dome Island and The Sagamore Resort. On clear days, you can even spot the distant Adirondack High Peaks.

To begin your hike, park at the Buck Mountain Trailhead located on Shelving Rock Road. Be prepared for potentially muddy sections, especially near the start and where you cross streams. If you plan to hike in colder months, snow can often be present closer to the summit, so consider bringing appropriate footwear like sturdy hiking boots, and possibly microspikes or snowshoes depending on the conditions.

This trail offers a rewarding experience for its diverse scenery and the spectacular vistas from the top. The journey through varied forest types, from mixed uplands to conifers, provides a dynamic natural environment. The clear views of Lake George and its surroundings make the ascent particularly memorable, offering a unique perspective of the region's natural beauty and landmarks.
