The Basilica of St. Francis gradually appears, and from higher points, you can see expansive panoramic views of the Umbrian valley.

While the Mattonata itself is a firm, accessible path, be aware that some sections of the broader St. Francis Way, of which this trail is a part, can involve uphills and stony tracks. It leads you to the Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli, which houses the sacred Porziuncola chapel where St. Francis understood his vocation.
