The motif "Saint Francis preaching to the birds" has been known and widespread in paintings for centuries. So it should not be surprising to find a wooden statue on this theme when walking through Assisi. In this case, however, two stories have been combined and a wolf is found sitting at the feet of the holy preacher. Is he listening to Francis' words or is he perhaps eyeing one of the birds as possible prey?
