    Hiking

The Rifugio Giacomo di Brazzà is located on the Montasio Plateau, in the Julian Alps. It offers typical Friulian cuisine and overnight accommodation, can be reached from Sella Nevea, and is the starting point for the Sentiero Attrezzato Ceria-Merlone. It is open from mid-June to the end of September, and to check the openings on weekends during the rest of the year, I recommend consulting the refuge page: facebook.com/rifugiodibrazza

Embark on a difficult 10.7-mile (17.2 km) loop through the Julian Alps, gaining 3675 feet (1120 metres) in elevation over approximately 7 hours and 41 minutes. This challenging route offers highly panoramic views, especially from Passo degli Scalini, where you can see the Canin, Jôf Fuart, Mangart, and Jalovec groups. You will traverse diverse terrain, including steep ascents, grassy slopes, and limestone rocks, with the path opening into a basin after an initial climb from Sella Nevea. Keep an eye out for rich flowering plants and ibex as you hike through high pastures.

This demanding loop requires a good level of fitness, sure-footedness, and sturdy hiking shoes; alpine experience is also recommended. Be prepared for demanding sections with loose rocks and potential exposure and tricky turns, particularly on the north side of Passo degli Scalini. While the research mentions Casera Cregnedul di Sopra was closed for works, nearby Malga Grantagar operates as an agriturismo, offering refreshments and overnight stays.

The trail is rich in historical significance, featuring numerous remnants from World War I, including military ruins, trenches, and tunnels. Passo degli Scalini, an ancient crossing point, gets its name from the
