In earlier times, an ointment oven was used to obtain cart ointments and creosote. The resinous logs were heated so much that the resin ran out and could then be further processed into tar water, pine oil, car grease, wood tar and pitch. Up until the 19th century there were a number of such ointment ovens in the surrounding woods.
